BC Woodlots - Overview

Woodlot forestry in British Columbia involves the management of forest holdings that vary in size, ownership and use. There are approximately 20,000 private woodlot owners in BC who own more than 20 hectares. In addition to operating forestry businesses, many woodlots are also used for purposes such as recreational use and protecting wildlife. A dominant theme among many woodlot owners is a strong stewardship ethic directed to support community economic development while practicing sustainable natural resource management.

Woodlot owners who do harvest the forests often operate as a family run forest company that must follow the same obligations as larger forest companies. Responsibilities such as abiding to the Forest Practices Code, writing forest development plans and building forestry roads all apply to woodlot owners.

Products offered by woodlot owners range greatly and include raw logs, kiln dried lumber, specialty lumber, engineered wood products, wood fibre, commercial clears and other wood products.

In recent years a network of woodlot associations has formed through the Federation of British Columbia Woodlot Associations to bring together interested groups, promote benefits and improve the conditions necessary for small scale landowners to be profitable.
